Data Recovery Ethics - i.e. Privacy After a Hard Drive Crash - Hawaii

print this article

While privacy may be the last concern in the mind of someone who has just lost all of their contacts, all of their most important work, and, in many cases, a crucial part of the tool that enables them to earn a living, it is an important to choose a qualified company to restore data from damaged hard drives. In particular, consumers should be careful to ask the following questions:

  1. What safeguards are used to ensure that the data being recovered will be kept away from third parties?
  2. What legal agreements are in place to ensure that the information being recovered cannot be sold to competitors?
  3. What will be done with the damaged hard drive, and are there extra fees for the return of this hard drive?
  4. Where will extra copies of the data be stored?
  5. Are backups taken of the drive image?
  6. What happens to credit card data, passwords stored in browsers, and other private information that may be stored in the hard drive?

Transparen Corporation takes special steps to ensure that the client's data is kept private. Here are a few highlights:

  1. In the initial stage of data recovery evaluation, you may request that temporary files be stored in the office of a legal firm, where the materials are secured by two sets of locks and an alarm system, and the only permitted cleaning staff are trusted relatives of lawyers.
  2. Work is performed only by qualified staff who have an intimate understanding of confidentiality issues.
  3. All work product is kept within Canada (please note that this feature of Transparen Data Recovery Services is only available to customers who are physically located within Canada), where information is legally protected by strong privacy legislation. We can legally release your information to third parties only with your permission or if we are required to do so by a court order. In the case of a court order, we must inform you that this has occurred.

Please note that:

  1. Technical work is not performed by lawyers, and is probably not subject to privilege.
  2. There may be private data belonging to other people on the hard drives that you provide to us - and it is your responsibility to ensure that you have obtained their permission to give this hard drive to us for the purpose of recovering the data.

Next Steps:

  1. Learn how hard drives fail
  2. Review data recovery prices
  3. Contact Transparen for more information
